Academic Clemency

Philosophy

Students who unsuccessfully attempted college work at ENMU and now wish to resume their college careers but are held back by poor academic records may, through academic clemency, exclude the poor academic record from their current work under certain conditions.

Criteria

  1. At the time of readmission, the student must have not attended ENMU or any of its branches or learning center for five or more years.
  2. The student must complete the first 12 hours after returning with a minimum grade of "C" or better in each class taken. If more than 12 hours are earned prior to seeking clemency, the student must earn a grade of "C" or better in each class.

Procedure

Students who meet these criteria may apply for clemency in the Office of the Registrar after completion of 12 or more hours. No courses taken prior to the student's return will be counted in their Eastern New Mexico University GPA. Courses with a grade of "D" or better will be carried forward as earned credit only and can be used to meet degree requirements. A grade of "D", however, does not count in the student's major or minor.

  • This policy pertains to the calculation of the GPA for progress toward degree completion and does not pertain to GPA calculated for graduation, professional certification and/or licensing (such as teacher education).
  • Students can avail themselves of this policy only once, and it is not reversible. Grades earned before clemency will continue to show on the student's record. The award of academic clemency is noted on the transcript with an asterisk (*) by the grade.
  • A student who has already graduated may not apply for clemency.

This policy went into effect with the 1995 summer term and is available to students whose return after a five or more year absence was in the summer of 1995 or any subsequent term.
